Position: Vessel Masters / USV (Uncrewed Surface Vessel) Pilots Qualification: Maritime Qualification - Navigation Location: Remote working in Netherlands

About XOCEAN XOCEAN is an ocean data company that collects data for clients, ranging from seabed mapping to environmental monitoring, using our unique marine robotic system known as an Uncrewed Surface Vessel (USV).

The Role

As a USV Master, you will be responsible for the safe navigation and conduct of the USV, with the ultimate authority to make safety-related decisions. You will ensure that operations align with XOCEAN's Business Processes and Management System.

Responsibilities

• Ensure the safe navigation of the USV at all times.
• Communicate effectively with the Marine and XOCEAN Operating Centre teams.
• Prepare and complete relevant documentation within management systems.
• Ensure all USV equipment is functional and report defects immediately.
• Maintain accurate USV official logbooks.
• Monitor and report on weather systems affecting operations.
• Plan and prepare passage plans for USVs.
• Update navigational charts and digital publications.
• Assist in assessing and implementing survey routes, monitoring data quality during operations (training provided).
• Oversee the health, safety, and welfare of personnel involved in USV operations.
• Foster a positive health and safety culture within the organization.
• Review and develop Operational Risk Assessments with appropriate mitigations.
• Perform any other duties as required by the Marine Superintendent or Deputy.

Health, Safety & Environment

The USV Master will:

• Adhere to Health, Safety & Environmental protocols.
• Commit to preventing environmental damage.
• Ensure Risk Assessments are conducted for all tasks.
• Participate in the HSE safety observation program.
• Comply with XOCEAN’s Lifesaving Rules and maintain safe worksites and tools.

Requirements

Essential Skills – Experience – Attributes

• Minimum STCW Master 200T (UK - Code vessel) with unlimited operational area; other certifications may be considered.
• Ability to obtain an MCA CoC if not currently held.
• Valid STCW courses (First Aid, PSSR, PST FP/FF).
• Medical certificate.
• Radar training certificate.
• VHF Radio Certificate – ROC or GOC.
• Stability course/training.
• Strong knowledge of collision regulations and sea-going experience.
• Strong computer literacy.
• Enthusiastic, positive, and proactive attitude.
• Full clean driver’s license.
• Willingness to occasionally attend the XOCEAN Head office or Technical Centre for piloting duties.

Desirable Experience

• Previous experience in a similar role.
• Willingness to learn new processes in the evolving Remote / MASS industry.
• Experience in offshore surveying operations.
• Ability to secure an MCA certificate if not already held.
