Join us in advancing the understanding of thermally induced earthquakes related to geothermal energy extraction. This two-year postdoctoral position at TU Delft focuses on monitoring seismic events, combining laboratory experiments, field monitoring, and numerical modeling.
We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a two-year position funded by NWO, focusing on the monitoring of thermally induced seismic events in geothermal energy extraction. As geothermal energy plays a crucial role in sustainable heating, understanding the associated seismicity is vital for project acceptance. This project aims to answer the question: 'When can reservoir cooling in sedimentary geothermal projects lead to significant seismic activity?' The research will integrate laboratory experiments, geophysical field monitoring, and numerical reservoir modeling.
The successful candidate will undertake three primary tasks: performing centroid-moment tensor inversions for small induced seismic events in the Groningen area, developing an inversion strategy tailored for small events and sparse seismic data, and conducting centroid-moment tensor inversions for low-magnitude events in geothermal projects, focusing on the volumetric component of the moment tensor.
