The LALA project investigates the nature and historical context of activities in philosophy, especially logic, mathematics, and astronomy, in 5th-6th century Alexandria. The research team consists of three postdocs and a PI, focusing on the philosophical heritage of Hypatia, the principle of non-contradiction in Ammonius' school, and the use of syllogisms in Ammonius' commentaries. You will conduct research on a topic that aligns with the project's aims, such as metaphysical commitments in the writings of Ammonius' commentators or the relationship between political and religious circumstances and philosophical activities in Alexandria.
The project is part of the VU Department of Philosophy, with strong ties to the Department of Art & Culture, History, and Antiquity.
