Are you a meteorologist or climate scientist eager to explore the connections between climate extremes and wildfire risks? This position offers the chance to engage in a research project aimed at comprehending the most extreme fire weather events and their potential changes due to global warming. The Meteorology and Air Quality (MAQ) Group at Wageningen University and Research seeks a PhD candidate with a background in meteorology, atmospheric or climate sciences to investigate unprecedented fire weather risks. Extreme fire weather, which encompasses the meteorological factors influencing fire risk—such as heat, drought, wind, and atmospheric aridity—has become increasingly severe due to climate change, particularly in the Northern Hemisphere mid-latitudes. Understanding the most intense and persistent fire weather conditions today, as well as anticipating how these may worsen in the future, is vital for fire risk assessment and preparedness. This PhD project aims to answer critical questions regarding worst-case fire weather scenarios under current and future climates, the atmospheric mechanisms driving these conditions, and their relation to actual fire occurrences and behaviors. You will analyze historical extreme events and compare them with findings from advanced climate modeling experiments. Supervised by Dr. Laura Suarez-Gutierrez and in collaboration with Prof. Guido van der Werf, you will thrive in a multidisciplinary environment with expertise in weather and climate extremes, fire dynamics, and their interactions.
Your Qualities
A C1 level command of English is expected, with the possibility of requiring an internationally recognized Certificate of Proficiency in the English Language.
