We are seeking a passionate and skilled PhD candidate to participate in the NWO-VIDI project 'Not-Just-Water', focusing on the impact of extreme water events on infrastructure. These events, including flash floods, dam failures, coastal flooding, storm surges, and tsunamis, create highly unsteady flows that interact with structures in ways that are not yet fully understood. This project aims to bridge the knowledge gap concerning the coupling between hydraulic processes and structural responses.
In this PhD project, you will investigate the dynamics of impacts on structures, establishing connections between unsteady hydraulic loads and the structural responses. You will work in TU Delft’s Hydraulic Engineering laboratory, designing and executing advanced large-scale experiments utilizing our dam-break facility and instrumented building models (both impervious and with openings) to measure loads and pressures on various structural elements. By integrating experimental data with numerical simulations (e.g., CFD-OpenFOAM, OpenSees), you will enhance our understanding of the interactions between water and structures during extreme events. Your research will contribute to safer and more optimized engineering solutions at the intersection of hydraulic and structural engineering.
This position provides a unique opportunity to engage in fundamental research with tangible real-world impacts, developing the knowledge and tools necessary to better protect communities from future extreme events. You will collaborate closely with international academic and industrial partners within a multidisciplinary team at the forefront of climate-resilient infrastructure research.
