This PhD project at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology in Wageningen focuses on the significance of epigenetic variation for rapid adaptation in wild plant populations. By investigating genetic, epigenetic, and gene expression differences among apomictic dandelion plants, the project aims to uncover how natural epialleles contribute to heritable trait differences. Rapid adaptation is essential for both natural plant populations and crops in the face of climate change, and understanding the sources of heritable trait variation is crucial. This project will utilize a unique model system of apomictic dandelions, enabling a clear distinction between genetic and epigenetic effects.

The Role

As a PhD candidate at NIOO-KNAW, you will study various accessions from a widespread dandelion lineage to:

1. Identify heritable differences in gene expression between accessions.
2. Screen for genomic evidence linking DNA methylation to gene expression differences.
3. Explore environmental influences on the origin of potential epialleles.

You will:

• Oversee DNA sequencing for targeted analysis of DNA methylation, SNP, and structural variation.
• Conduct differential gene expression analyses.
• Perform bioinformatic and statistical analyses to interpret genetic and DNA methylation variation.
• Assist with greenhouse work for phenotypic analyses.
• Coordinate with research groups and supervise BSc and MSc students.
• Write and publish research findings in scientific journals and present at conferences.

Requirements

We seek an enthusiastic candidate with a strong background in genomic and bioinformatic analyses, and an interest in epigenetics and adaptation in wild plants. You should possess:

• An MSc degree in plant sciences, bioinformatics, plant genomics, or a related field.
• Excellent data analysis skills for bioinformatics and statistics.
• Experience in next-generation DNA sequencing analysis, preferably with long-read ONT data.
• Interest in linking molecular mechanisms to evolutionary and ecological concepts.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively, guiding students and fostering a positive team environment.
• Proficiency in English (C1 level).

Experience with sequencing-based DNA methylation and transposable element analysis is a plus.

The position is for 0.8-1.0 fte, initially for 1 year, extendable to a maximum of 4 years based on performance. Terms of Employment
