Silicon-based microchips are the essential building block of modern electronic hardware, such as computers and cell phones. Can silicon also play a critical role in building the next generation of the internet - the quantum internet? In order to realize a fully functional and scalable quantum network, we are developing highly coherent single photon emitters using erbium ions operating in the telecom C-band and directly embedded in a solid state crystal, such as silicon. Crucially, we are able to realize high-quality light-matter interfaces and directly enhance the photon emission into an optical channel using photonic crystal cavities. By leveraging different isotopes for long-lived and programmable quantum registers, we are planning on realizing all the critical parts for a quantum network using fully integrated and highly scalable structures.
In order to help us achieve our ambitious goals, we are looking for a talented and motivated person, with strong curiosity of rare-earth ion physics, single-emitters in solid-state systems or experimental AMO physics. The successful candidate will work in a dynamic team environment.
At the Groeblacher Lab we have a vision: we strive to be an inclusive place where a diverse mix of talented people want to come, to learn, to live their passion and do their best work. We are dedicated to promoting equality, creating a safe environment for everyone, and believe deeply in diversity of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, national origin, age, socioeconomic background and all the other fascinating characteristics that make us different. We truly think diversity is a strength and working in a diverse environment, and being exposed to a variety of perspectives makes us stronger scientists and better human beings.
The Department of Quantum Nanoscience at TU Delft is an exciting, collaborative environment with several world-renowned research groups. The department is focused on Quantum Theory, Quantum Information Science, and Quantum Devices & Materials. The research is supported by state-of-the-art facilities, particularly the cleanroom facilities for realizing next-generation nanostructures.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn new experimental techniques (microfabrication, quantum optics, cryogenics, etc.), understand the underlying principles of single-photon emitters, and gain deep knowledge in finite element simulation and advanced computer-based experimentation. As a PhD student, you will also be given the opportunity to supervise Master students and receive all the training needed to evolve into an independent scientist.
