Vacancies Summary
Join our team to tackle challenges in greenhouse horticulture through innovative microclimate observation networks. This PhD position focuses on experimental research to optimize the growth conditions of greenhouse crops using advanced sensing technologies.
In this PhD project, you will address the critical role of crop microclimate in enhancing greenhouse productivity. The project aims to develop high-resolution microclimate observation networks that can lead to energy savings by optimizing the growth microclimate for greenhouse crops. You will engage in experimental research to advance novel approaches that uncover complex dynamics of heat, CO2, and moisture transfer in greenhouses and vertical farms.
Your primary focus will be on experimental work, creating new microclimate sensing setups to investigate the microclimate within and above greenhouse canopies. You will design and test various microclimate boxes with different shielding configurations and materials, comparing their performance against reference sensors such as fine-wire thermometers and high-accuracy hot-wire anemometers in a microclimate sensing setup at Unifarm (WU). The ultimate goal is to design and implement a network of autonomous climate boxes (measuring radiation, temperature, relative humidity, and CO2), incorporating IoT solutions for data communication. Additionally, you will analyze temperature, water vapor, and CO2 profiles within the canopy to explore flux-gradient relationships and address questions regarding resistance analogies and multi-layer representations of these dynamics.
You will be part of the Water Management Department within the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at TU Delft, collaborating with a diverse team of researchers and industry partners. If you are interested in this opportunity, please apply before 15 July 2026 by submitting your CV and motivation letter addressed to Marie-Claire ten Veldhuis.
