Energy storage is crucial for managing the gap between electricity consumption and intermittent renewable energy supply. As the integration of renewable electricity increases, efficient storage solutions are essential to alleviate grid congestion and transmission issues. Current technologies suffice for short to medium durations, but solutions for over 25 hours are limited.

In response, we initiated the REDOX BLEND research project, a collaboration among seven Dutch universities and knowledge institutes (TU Delft, RUG, UTwente, TU/Eindhoven, U Nijmegen, DIFFER, TNO) aimed at developing next-generation batteries for ultra-long-duration energy storage.

This project will focus on inorganic, hydrogen-based flow batteries with high power and energy density, including the hydrogen-iodine flow battery, which has shown promising kinetics and high iodine solubility with recent advancements. However, further analysis is needed on the configuration and long-term stability of this alkaline H2-I2 battery, with results to be compared against other flow battery chemistries from various partners (Aquabattery, Elestor, Ore Energy).

We seek a candidate with outstanding BSc/MSc performance, knowledge of electrochemistry, and laboratory experience. The ideal candidate will possess strong engineering skills to demonstrate this technology at the stack level, a proactive mindset, and the ability to collaborate effectively with project partners to evaluate the technology from multiple perspectives.
