The Institute for History at the University of Leiden invites applications for a PhD Position (1 FTE) in the area of Belonging of European Muslims to the EU. The successful candidate will join the NOW Open-L funded project ‘European Muslims and Belonging to the EU, 2015-2025’ led by Professor Sarah Wolff, with an expected start date of 1 January 2027.

Project Description

This project investigates the sense of belonging of European Muslims to the European Union (EU), their relationship with the EU, and their experiences of EU citizenship. It aims to answer under-researched questions regarding belonging, agency, and representation in EU institutions, conceptualizing how European Muslims negotiate their belonging. The project defines European Muslims as individuals self-identifying as Muslims with EU citizenship, focusing on emotional attachment, political values, and ethical commitments to the EU. The research hypothesizes that belonging varies across institutional, transnational, and societal dimensions.

Moving beyond conventional studies that portray Muslims in Europe as outsiders, this project views them as active agents of their belonging within the EU. The project has four main objectives: (1) Analyze how EU institutions produce politics of belonging; (2) Document the transnational agency of European Muslims through mobilization and litigation; (3) Theorize the varieties of belonging regimes in different countries; (4) Examine the meanings European Muslims ascribe to their belonging to the EU and its implications for the future of Europe and democracy.
