The department of Ocean Systems (OCS) at the Royal Netherlands Institute of Sea Research (NIOZ), led by principal investigator Dr. Lennart de Nooijer, is seeking a highly motivated PhD student with a background in cell biology, (bio)geochemistry, or chemical oceanography to study biomineralization in foraminiferal calcite and its relationship with climate change.

About the Company

NWO-NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research is the Dutch national oceanographic institute, dedicated to conducting multidisciplinary, fundamental, and applied marine research that addresses critical scientific and societal questions regarding the ocean's functioning. NIOZ operates the National Marine Research Facilities (NMF) department, which manages a fleet of research vessels and supports excellence in marine research, education, and policy development.

The Role

As a PhD candidate, you will investigate the biochemical and cellular processes involved in calcium carbonate precipitation, particularly in relation to seawater pCO2 and temperature. Utilizing a variety of analytical equipment at NIOZ, you will explore ion uptake mechanisms and crystallization dynamics, contributing to predictions of future marine calcification rates and carbon cycling in a changing ocean. Collaboration with the Radboud UMC group will allow for high-resolution analysis of the calcifying microenvironment in foraminifera.

Responsibilities

• Conduct research on calcium carbonate precipitation in foraminifera.
• Analyze ion uptake mechanisms and crystallization dynamics using advanced analytical techniques.
• Collaborate with Radboud UMC for nanometer-scale resolution analysis.
• Present research findings at international conferences and prepare scientific articles for peer-reviewed journals.
• Engage in open and effective communication within the department and with international colleagues.

Requirements

• MSc degree in biology, earth sciences, marine sciences, or a related field.
• Experience and affinity with biogeochemistry and marine research.
• Passion for chemical laboratory work and data analysis.
• Strong communication skills in English.
• Team player with an open and collaborative attitude.
