In this PhD position, you will design simulation models that enable airlines to operate future aircraft types profitably and sustainably before they enter service. The research focuses on new aircraft concepts powered by alternative energy sources, which present unique performance characteristics that necessitate a reevaluation of airline operations.

You will develop methods and models to couple new aircraft designs with fleet allocation and scheduling decisions, aiming to minimize emissions upon the introduction of new aircraft types. Your work will contribute to a larger simulation environment evaluating the future airspace.

Verantwoordelijkheden

• Develop models characterizing key performance differences between current and future aircraft.
• Evaluate the impact of these differences on fleet assignment and network planning.
• Optimize airline operations based on new aircraft capabilities.
• Assess the economic and climate impact of fleet-wide operations.
• Collaborate with other departments to expand optimization models to include additional domains (e.g., noise).

Vereisten

• MSc degree in Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
• Strong programming skills in Python and experience in building simulation environments.
• Experience with fleet planning, airline network scheduling, and/or optimization methods is a plus.
• Genuine interest in sustainable aviation.
• Proactive, problem-solving attitude with strong communication and academic writing skills in English.

• A 4-year employment contract, divided into an initial 1.5-year contract followed by a 2.5-year contract based on performance.
• Salary ranging from €3059 to €3881 gross per month, plus 8% holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3%.
