In the Netherlands and globally, the housing crisis and climate crisis intersect in complex ways, demanding innovative spatial solutions that often conflict. This PhD project examines how planning techniques shape governance decisions and the urban futures that emerge from them.

The Role

This research will focus on how climate risk is framed in planning as a technical issue, often managed through tools like cost-benefit analysis (CBA). The project argues that valuation techniques are not neutral; they are socio-political instruments that influence local planning decisions. By analyzing the 'boring power' of these techniques, the project aims to uncover their implications and explore alternative practices.

Responsibilities

• Conduct qualitative case study research on urban planning and climate adaptation projects.
• Perform interviews and ethnographic fieldwork with various stakeholders including planners, developers, and policymakers.
• Analyze planning documents, valuation reports, and policy debates.
• Investigate the transfer of planning techniques between global networks and local practices.
• Develop new conceptual frameworks for planning under climate change.
• Publish academic articles and present findings at international conferences.
• Collaborate with academic and societal partners.
• Contribute to teaching activities (maximum 10%) within the department.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Urban or Spatial Planning, Human Geography, or a related field with a strong GPA.
• Strong interest in the power dynamics and rhetoric of urban planning techniques.
• Experience with qualitative research methods such as interviews and ethnography.
• Basic numerical analysis skills.
• Strong analytical and academic writing abilities.
• Ability to build relationships with stakeholders in planning practice.
• Motivation to work across disciplines.
• Excellent command of English (spoken and written).
• Experience with STS-inspired approaches or planning systems is an advantage.

• A full-time position (1.0 FTE) for 1 year, extendable to a total of four years upon successful assessment.
