Are you a highly motivated researcher passionate about urban climate and hydrometeorological modeling, urban biometeorology, and climate-sensitive urban design? We are looking for a talented PhD candidate to join the Horizon Europe Innovation Action Project EUROASIS (EUROpean Adaptive, Systemic and Inclusive Solutions for heat resilience). This position will focus on evaluating and scaling systemic heat-mitigation innovations across four major European pilot cities: Amsterdam, Athens, Zaragoza, and Reggio Emilia.

The Role

You will assess how physical, nature-based, and digital interventions—such as Amsterdam's shaded routes and Zaragoza's climate oases—impact outdoor thermal conditions and reduce heat exposure for urban populations. Collaborating with international partners, you will integrate microclimatic simulations with epidemiological data to quantify heat-health benefits, bridging the gap between high-resolution climate modeling and public health outcomes. Your research will lead to publications in peer-reviewed journals and project deliverables.

About the Company

The Meteorology and Air Quality Group (MAQ) at Wageningen University & Research is dedicated to understanding atmospheric processes and their relevance for weather, air quality, and climate. We conduct research on various topics and scales and are responsible for educating students in Meteorology and Air Quality at the BSc and MSc levels.

Requirements

• Master's degree in Urban (Bio)Climate, (Hydro)Meteorology, Climate Science, Environmental Physics, Physical Geography, Urban Design, or a related field.
• Experience in atmospheric numerical modeling (e.g., RANS, LES) and scientific programming, or strong motivation to learn.
• Interest in biometeorology, human thermal comfort, and heat indices, with a focus on public health data.
• Strong analytical, programming, and writing skills, with the ambition to publish.
• Good time management and a collaborative mindset for working with diverse stakeholders.
• Willingness to travel to pilot cities for fieldwork.
• Proficiency in English at C1 level.

What We Offer

• Excellent employment terms, including partially paid parental leave and flexible working hours.
• Access to sports facilities on campus and a fixed year-end bonus of 8.3%.
• A gross salary starting at €3,059 per month, increasing to €3,881 by the fourth year, based on a full-time schedule.
• A temporary contract for 18 months, extendable based on performance.
