In this PhD position, you will develop macroeconomic models to identify tipping points in the relationship between flood risk changes, financial markets, and response strategies like protection, retreat, and living with water.

The Role

You will build a macroeconomic model linking long-term flood risk management strategies to financial sector behavior and the broader economic development of the Netherlands. This project will involve quantifying how long-term solutions impact interest rates, capital requirements for banks and insurers, and overall economic growth. You will also study tipping points for the financial sector based on evolving flood probabilities and impacts.

Responsibilities

• Develop a macroeconomic model that incorporates the response of financial institutions to climate change and long-term adaptation strategies.
• Identify tipping points where climate adaptation influences investment choices.
• Analyze adaptation pathways that combine prevention, spatial planning, and financial instruments.
• Collaborate with project partners on case studies in the Netherlands and explore international applications.
• Present findings at international conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
• Complete a PhD thesis within four years and contribute to teaching activities.

Requirements

• Master’s degree (or completion before September 2026) in Economics, Econometrics, Actuarial Science, Applied Mathematics, Environmental Sciences, or a related field.
• Strong quantitative background and familiarity with dynamic optimization or macroeconomic modeling.
• Experience with programming languages such as Python, R, or MATLAB.
• Ability to collaborate with stakeholders from the financial sector and government.
• Interest in Dutch spatial planning and water management is a plus.
• Fluency in English is essential; proficiency in Dutch is an asset.
• Intellectual curiosity and attention to detail.

What We Offer

• A temporary contract for 38 hours per week for a duration of 4 years, with a gross monthly salary ranging from €3,204 to €4,051, excluding holiday allowance and year-end bonus.
