Are you passionate about applying AI in flood risk modelling to tackle questions beyond existing datasets? We are seeking a PhD candidate to create credible extreme flood scenarios that exceed historical observations, aiding in understanding climate change effects on the financial sector.

About the Company

The Flood Insurance and Risk Management (FIRM) program is a five-year initiative (2026–2030), funded by TKI Deltatechnologie and Nationale-Nederlanden, along with contributions from over 10 partners across academia, finance, engineering, and government. FIRM aims to provide realistic flood risk information for the financial sector.

The Role

As a PhD candidate, you will develop AI methods to enhance existing flood scenarios derived from physical models, incorporate climate change effects, and assess future insurability of flood risks. You will also create AI methods for rapid damage estimates for financial institutions during floods.

Responsibilities

• Develop hybrid AI methods to extend flood scenarios, incorporating non-linear effects and uncertainty.
• Translate current scenarios into future climate states using climate scenarios and adaptation pathways.
• Build AI methods for early warning systems and long-term insurability maps.
• Validate methods through case studies in the Netherlands and internationally.
• Present findings at international conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
• Contribute to teaching activities, including tutorials and supervising Bachelor’s theses.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in Computer Science, AI, Applied Mathematics, Hydrology, Civil Engineering, Actuarial Science, or related fields.
• Strong programming skills in Python; familiarity with deep learning frameworks is advantageous.
• Interest in hydrology and the physical behaviour of water systems.
• Ability to communicate technical outputs to non-specialists.
• Fluency in English; proficiency in Dutch is a plus.
• Intellectual curiosity and attention to detail.
