The Role

As a Painter, you will support the National Science Foundation-managed United States Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). Your tasks will include surface preparation and painting under the supervision of the Carpenter Foreman or Facilities Maintenance Supervisor, based on ASC schedule requirements.

Responsibilities

• Paint interior walls, piping, ceilings, floors, furniture, and other items requiring a paint finish.
• Paint exterior surfaces of buildings, towers, and structures.
• Utilize various paint materials and application tools.
• Perform drywall repairs, taping, finishing, and texturing.
• Respond to emergency service calls during and outside normal working hours.
• Document hours worked, tasks performed, materials used, and processes involved accurately.
• Advise your Supervisor on job progress and material/labor requirements.
• Complete tasks using design drawings, specifications, and wiring diagrams.
• Follow established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and suggest revisions as needed.
• Work outdoors in challenging environmental conditions, including wind and extreme cold.
• Identify unsafe conditions or hazards and communicate them effectively.
• Collaborate with other departments to plan and complete tasks.
• Learn and utilize computer-based labor, material, and maintenance tracking applications.
• May deploy to remote research support facilities for day trips or extended periods (McMurdo only).
• Participate in community programs such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (station clean-up), and recycling efforts.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED.
• Minimum 4 years of experience in all phases of painting, including interior and exterior work.
• Experience with scaffolding and/or aerial lifts.
• Prior computer experience and willingness to learn computer-based tracking applications.

Nice to Have

• Experience in a commercial or industrial environment.
• Familiarity with industrial coatings.
• Ability to read and interpret design drawings, specifications, and wiring diagrams.
• Experience working in remote locations or extreme environments.
• Experience working in confined spaces.
