Packaging innovation is rapidly evolving, with new materials, manufacturing technologies, sustainability solutions, and consumer expectations emerging each year. At Philips, we actively monitor these developments, yet we often have limited chances to transform these innovations into tangible concepts and prototypes.

The Role

You will be involved in various aspects of packaging innovation, including research, concept development, prototyping, and knowledge building.

Responsibilities

• Packaging Innovation Research:

  • Investigate trends in packaging design, sustainability, materials, manufacturing technologies, consumer experience, and retail presentation.
  • Benchmark innovative packaging solutions from various industries.
  • Explore emerging material technologies and evaluate their relevance for Philips.
  • Convert research findings into actionable insights for future packaging development.

• Concept Development:

  • Develop structural packaging concepts inspired by emerging trends and technologies.
  • Combine innovative materials, finishes, graphics, and structures to create compelling packaging experiences.
  • Produce visualizations, mock-ups, and concept proposals.
  • Assist in ideation workshops and innovation sessions within the Packaging team.

• Prototyping & Validation:

  • Design and construct physical prototypes using Philips packaging workshop and available prototyping equipment.
  • Test concepts and gather feedback from stakeholders and users.
  • Document learnings, opportunities, and recommendations.
  • Present concepts and prototypes to packaging designers, engineers, marketing teams, and management.

• Knowledge Building:

  • Systematically capture innovations, concepts, and lessons learned.
  • Contribute to building a knowledge base to support future Philips packaging innovations and standards.
  • Share findings with the global Packaging Design team.

Requirements

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Industrial Product Design or a related field.
• Strong organizational and structured thinking skills.
• Interest in packaging innovation.
• Analytical mindset with attention to detail.
• Proactive attitude and eagerness to learn in a complex, cross-functional environment.
• Proficiency in PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook; familiarity with prototyping (3D printing), 3D CAD, Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop.

What We Offer

• A continuous growth opportunity within a global multinational company, along with competitive remuneration:
  • Monthly full-time allowance between €500 - €700 gross, depending on education level and relocation needs to the Netherlands. Part-time internships receive a pro-rata allowance.
  • Housing compensation: €300 net for locations near Amsterdam, €255 net for other Philips locations, with eligibility based on distance and rental contract.
  • Travel compensation of up to €192 net monthly if not eligible for a public transport card.
  • Paid holidays per internship term.
  • Opportunity to purchase Philips products at our shop.

How We Work Together

We believe in collaboration and encourage our office-based teams to work in-person at least 3 days per week. This is an onsite role.
