The Role

As a Maintenance Specialist, you will support the National Science Foundation-managed United States Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). You will perform maintenance or construction work, or a combination of both, under the supervision of the Preventative Maintenance Foreman (McMurdo/South Pole), Facilities Maintenance Supervisor, or Preventative Maintenance Coordinator (Palmer). Your tasks will be assigned based on your prior work experience and ASC schedule requirements.

Responsibilities

Diagnose, repair, and perform scheduled Preventative Maintenance on existing buildings, systems, equipment, fixtures, and infrastructure.
Manage small maintenance projects within your work area, coordinating with other trades, equipment, tools, parts, and schedules, reporting to the PM Foreman and Facilities Maintenance Supervisor.
Perform major overhauls including dismantling, replacing parts, and making repairs to facilities-related equipment such as heating, ventilation, cooling, refrigeration, overhead doors, hoists, compressors, hydronic systems, pumps, kitchen equipment, shop tools, and other equipment.
Accomplish tasks using job plans, verbal instructions, schematics, blueprints, wiring diagrams, vendor manuals, and applicable specifications and codes.
Analyze equipment breakdowns and make technical decisions based on manufacturer recommendations.
Respond promptly to emergency service calls during and outside normal working hours.
Collaborate with other station personnel to complete tasks or assist other trades as appropriate.
Prepare and document work plans, job hazard analyses, job safety analyses, and required forms and checklists.
Lead and oversee the work of Utility Technicians regularly.
Assist in the daily operations of a large maintenance crew and fill in for the Preventive Maintenance Foreman when necessary.
Implement and enforce the Preventative Maintenance Program, including inventory and work order management in the Maximo database.
Maintain detailed records and logs, interpret trends, and initiate resolutions to issues.
Submit reports as required by your supervisor, including quality assurance self-inspections.
Document hours worked, tasks performed, materials used, and processes involved accurately.
Advise your supervisor of job progress and material/labor requirements.
Utilize design drawings, specifications, and wiring diagrams to accomplish tasks.
Use solid decision-making skills and sound judgment to solve problems safely and effectively.
Deploy to remote research support facilities for day trips or extended periods as needed.
Maintain communication with your supervisor and management, including regular status reports on facilities equipment and significant issues.
Prepare and submit material resupply requests to maintain inventory of repair parts.
Coordinate with your supervisor on suggestions for edits and additions to Preventative Maintenance Tasks and maintain data integrity in the maintenance database.
Participate in training programs and meetings.
Ensure all facilities and equipment are maintained and operated safely and efficiently.
Review and follow established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and recommend revisions as needed.
Perform tasks outdoors in challenging environmental conditions, including extreme cold weather.
Proactively identify unsafe conditions, hazards, or code violations and communicate them effectively.
Comply with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management, and Quality Assurance requirements.
Participate in the Work Center Safety Program and ASC safety objectives.
Maintain a clean and safe work environment, tools, equipment, and spare parts.
Perform other duties as required.
