The Institute of Physics at the University of Amsterdam is looking for a motivated Lead Scientist in Quantum Applications and Partnerships (Assistant Professor 2 level), who will work closely with the Molecular and Material Design Technological Hub.

About the Company

The UvA Faculty of Science is launching a Quantum Simulation program aimed at enhancing Molecular and Material Design through Quantum Computing expertise. This initiative will integrate contributions from QuSoft, aQa, SURF, and various industry partners, forming a part of the vision for an advanced research center for quantum applications at the LabQ building in Amsterdam Science Park.

The Role

As the Lead Scientist, you will manage the Q-MMD seed funding projects, ensuring the development of necessary Quantum Software and Simulations. You will also connect with real Quantum Computing hardware for proof-of-concept studies and contribute to future Public-Private Partnerships, maintaining the expertise in quantum software for our faculty.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary contact for the Q-MMD seed funding projects.
• Coordinate the development of Quantum Software and Simulations.
• Establish connections with Quantum Computing hardware for practical studies.
• Lead and coordinate a Quantum Science & Technology expertise group within the Faculty of Science.
• Develop your own research line that complements the quantum ecosystem in Amsterdam.
• Teach in relevant programs, supervise bachelor and master students, and mentor PhD candidates.
• Contribute to securing external funding, particularly from industrial partners.
• Foster local, national, and international collaborations in the quantum field.

Requirements

• PhD in physics or a related discipline.
• Experience in quantum science and technology research.
• Familiarity with quantum software for scientific applications.
• Proven track record in research coordination and management.
• Experience in acquiring research funding from government or private sectors.
• Motivational teaching style with some experience in supervising MSc and/or PhD students.
• Professional command of English and willingness to learn Dutch.

What We Offer

• A temporary employment contract for 32-38 hours per week for 18 months, with a possibility of a permanent contract based on performance.
• Gross monthly salary between €4,728 and €6,433, excluding holiday and year-end allowances.
