The Dutch surface water faces significant challenges. Nutrients from agricultural lands, soil processes, and other sources affect the quality of ditches, streams, rivers, and lakes. At the same time, governments are addressing issues related to agriculture, nature restoration, climate adaptation, and achieving water quality goals. To develop effective measures, insight into the origin, distribution, and effects of nutrients in the water system is necessary.

Within the Surface Water team, we work on these issues for water authorities, provinces, Rijkswaterstaat, and ministries. We combine substantive system knowledge with data analysis and modeling to gain insight into the functioning of water systems and the effects of measures. We utilize the modeling tools developed by Arcadis for leaching and runoff: NUTRAN.

As a specialist in nutrient modeling and hydrology, you will contribute to studies on the origin and impact of nutrients in water systems. You will investigate how agricultural use, soil processes, hydrology, and leaching contribute to water quality. You will analyze data, work with models, and translate results into practical advice for clients.

You will have the opportunity to further develop within the field and will be guided by experienced colleagues. Together, you will work on innovative projects and contribute to the development of models, tools, and knowledge related to nutrients, hydrology, and water quality.

The Surface Water team is part of the Water & Climate advisory group. Within this advisory group, approximately 90 professionals collaborate on issues related to water management, climate adaptation, nature restoration, and the sustainable design of the Netherlands. We work for water authorities, provinces, Rijkswaterstaat, ministries, municipalities, and companies.

Within the Surface Water team, we combine in-depth knowledge of hydrology, water quality, nutrients, and water systems with innovative analytical methods and modeling. We engage in a wide range of projects, such as studies on freshwater availability, nutrients and water quality, water system analyses, climate resilience of water systems, and stream restoration.

You will join a close-knit and engaged team where colleagues actively share knowledge and help each other solve complex issues. We value regular interactions, collaboration on projects, and knowledge exchange. We combine the short lines and commitment of a specialized team with the opportunities of a large international organization.

Within the team, you will work closely with experienced specialists in nutrient modeling, hydrology, and water quality. This provides you the chance to develop into a specialist in your field while collaborating with experts from other disciplines, such as ecology, groundwater, climate adaptation, and data analysis. This way, you not only deepen your own expertise but also gain the opportunity to look more broadly at water and environmental issues.

You will collaborate with experienced colleagues on issues related to nutrients, hydrology, and water quality. You will have the space to develop into a specialist in the analysis of nutrient flows, leaching, and the functioning of water systems.

Some examples of tasks include:

Conducting analyses on the origin, distribution, and effects of nutrients in water systems;
Applying models and analytical tools, including NUTRAN, for issues related to water quality and nutrient loading;
Processing, analyzing, and interpreting measurement data, model results, and other data sources;
Contributing to reports, advice, and presentations for clients such as water authorities, provinces, Rijkswaterstaat, and ministries;
Participating in studies on water quality, freshwater availability, hydrology, and water system analyses;
Collaborating with specialists from various fields, such as hydrology, ecology, water quality, and climate adaptation;
Further developing knowledge, models, and innovative analytical methods within the field.

You will be guided by experienced colleagues and have the opportunity to develop both professionally and personally. As you gain experience, you will take on increasing responsibility within projects and client inquiries.

Kwalificaties & Ervaring

You are enthusiastic about tackling substantive issues in the areas of nutrients, hydrology, soil processes, and water quality. You enjoy understanding complex systems and are curious about the connections between agriculture, soil, water, and the environment.

Additionally, we ask for the following:

You have a completed HBO or WO degree in fields such as hydrology, earth sciences, environmental sciences, soil science, water management, environmental technology, chemistry, biology, or a comparable beta direction;
You have an affinity for modeling, data analysis, and working with complex datasets;
You are interested in issues related to nutrients, leaching, soil processes, and water quality;
You possess strong analytical skills and enjoy delving into complex questions and translating them into applicable advice;
You are proactive, eager to learn, and enjoy collaborating with colleagues from various disciplines;
You can effectively organize and execute your tasks in a structured manner;
You have an excellent command of the Dutch language, both spoken and written.

Experience with hydrological models, water quality models, or other modeling tools is a plus but not required. The same applies to relevant work experience in the water domain. We consider your interest, analytical ability, and potential for development to be equally important.
