We offer you an Ocean of Possibilities. Join our family. Damen Naval, part of the family-owned Damen Shipyards Group, employs 12,000 professionals globally, delivering advanced naval vessels worldwide. Join us in pushing the boundaries of shipbuilding technology. Are you ready for duty? ## About the Company Damen Naval specializes in delivering advanced naval vessels, focusing on innovative technological developments. ## The Role The survivability of naval vessels after an attack is crucial for their operators and crew. A well-designed vessel must withstand attacks, remain afloat, and defend itself. With evolving threats from missiles, mines, and torpedoes, predicting vulnerability aspects during design becomes increasingly complex. Damen Naval is committed to enhancing its products and developing next-generation vulnerability technology. Various graduate research or internship projects are available, supported by subject matter experts. Topics may include: - Plasticity, limit analysis, and structural design. - Prediction of material failure models for large steel thin-walled structures using FEA. - Influence of strain rates on material properties of various steel types. - Dynamic buckling of thin-walled plated structures. - Dynamic FEA analysis techniques, high versus low fidelity tools. - Predicting structural resistance during shock-induced global whipping. - Design of lightweight structures or foundations concerning shock compliance. - Bolt strength analysis under shock loading using FEA techniques. - Studying limit states of local and global ship structures under damage scenarios. You can propose your own specific topic of interest as well. ## Key Accountabilities As an intern or graduate student, you will encounter various aspects related to vulnerability. Depending on your assignment, you will select or develop the necessary analysis methods and engineering tools to achieve your research goals. You will be responsible from day one for planning and executing your research project, delivering a detailed analysis of your research problem, and communicating results to other departments. ## Skills & Experience The ideal candidate for this internship or graduation project has: - A Master's student in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Naval Architecture, or equivalent fields. - A passion for ships and shipbuilding, particularly military vessels. - Independence, curiosity, analytical thinking, and proactivity. - Familiarity with structural analysis and ship structural design. - Basic experience with simulation tools (e.g., Ansys, Femap, LS-Dyna) or a strong motivation to learn quickly. - Proficiency in programming tools (e.g., Python, MATLAB). - Ability to communicate with multiple stakeholders and manage their own planning. - Good command of Dutch and English, both written and verbal. ## What We Offer The project will ideally take place at the Damen Naval office in Vlissingen. A monthly allowance will be provided for the duration of the assignment. Temporary accommodation or housing compensation may be offered if needed. Flexible working hours can be discussed, and proper mentoring will be available throughout the project. ## Other If you're interested in a student project related to propulsion, energy, or ship service systems, please submit your application with your CV, curriculum with grades, motivation letter, and indicate: - Requested position (Internship or Graduation Assignment) - Your preferred topic or suggestions - Availability (full-time/part-time/number of hours) - Notice period/possible starting date - List of grades for insight into your subjects. Oceans, seas, lakes and rivers offer growing possibilities in the areas of trade, food, energy and recreation. To ensure global prosperity for next generations and keep the earth habitable with an ever-increasing population, it is essential to utilise and protect these possibilities as efficiently and responsibly as possible. Damen provides unprecedented maritime solutions for this, through design, shipbuilding, ship repair and related services. We offer versatile platforms that enable our customers to be successful and that raise the standard in terms of safety, reliability, efficiency and sustainability. We want to become the most sustainable shipbuilders in the world. In the previous century, we revolutionized shipbuilding. Thanks to standardisation, we were able to supply our customers with better ships, faster. More than 90 years and 6,500 ships later, the importance of standardisation is only increasing in the light of zero-emissions and digitalisation. We do not build our ships alone, but together with an extensive network from the international maritime cluster. We firmly believe in the power of sharing. It means that we also use our craftsmanship to build platforms on production facilities that are not ours. In this way, through knowledge transfer, we not only contribute to better, safer and more eco-friendly ships, but also to sustainable local development and prosperity. We are a family owned business and stand for fellowship, craftsmanship, entrepreneurship and stewardship. Our playing field is the world. Our horizon is the long term. We firmly believe in our team, but also in the strength of the individual. Each colleague is an entrepreneur, focused on ensuring truly satisfied clients and making our contribution to a better world.
