In this HBO internship, you will dive into DNA results from firearm investigations. Your analyses in the second line (DNA pre-investigation department) will have a direct impact on the forensic field. During this unique internship, you will have the chance to travel throughout the Netherlands for your research. Are you ready for this challenge?

The Role

Currently, each DNA pre-investigation laboratory in the Netherlands uses its own methods for sampling firearms. With the aim of centralizing our laboratories, we want to move towards a single, uniform national standard. The goal? To sample every firearm in the most promising way, regardless of the unit it comes from.

We will establish the framework for this research, and your input is highly welcome! Your focus will be on:

  • Inventorying and investigating which specific sampling methods are currently used in various Dutch DNA pre-investigation laboratories.
  • Analyzing and clarifying the results of these samplings so we can determine the exact effectiveness of each method.
  • Comparing and mapping which units conduct combined investigations (i.e., dactyloscopic and DNA analysis in one), which units perform dactyloscopic analysis after DNA analysis, or do not conduct any dactyloscopic analysis at all. You will also clarify the results of these approaches.

With your final advice, you will lay the groundwork for a new, standardized procedure for both DNA and dactylo pre-investigation within police laboratories.
