In this HBO internship in Forensic Investigation, you will focus on DNA results from firearm investigations. Your analyses at the second line (DNA pre-investigation department) will directly impact the forensic field. During this unique internship, you will have the chance to travel throughout the Netherlands for your research. Are you interested?

The Role

Currently, each DNA pre-investigation laboratory in the Netherlands uses its own methods for sampling firearms. With the aim of centralizing our laboratories, we want to move towards a uniform national standard. The goal? To sample every firearm in the most promising way, regardless of the unit it comes from.

We will establish the framework for this research, and your input is highly welcome! Your focus will be on:

  • Inventorying and identifying which specific sampling methods are currently used within the various Dutch DNA pre-investigation laboratories.
  • Analyzing and clarifying the results of these samplings so we can determine the exact effectiveness of each method.
  • Comparing and mapping which units conduct combined investigations (i.e., fingerprint and DNA analysis together), which units perform fingerprint analysis after DNA analysis, or do not conduct fingerprint analysis at all. Additionally, you will gain insight into the results of these investigations.

With your final advice, you will lay the foundation for a new, standardized approach for both DNA and fingerprint pre-investigation within the police laboratories.
