Legacy applications hold valuable knowledge, often buried in code, wikis, and outdated work items. You will create a smart tool that automatically compiles this knowledge into current documentation, making complex .NET systems more transparent and ready for the future.

Many organizations still rely on intricate legacy .NET applications, where knowledge is dispersed across source code, wikis, DevOps work items, emails, or simply in the minds of developers. This fragmentation makes it challenging to quickly grasp how an application operates, its dependencies, and the risks associated with changes.

Maintaining or expanding such systems requires considerable time to gather information, often lacking a complete overview.

There is an opportunity to innovate this process by generating documentation more intelligently and partially automatically. By combining knowledge from code, DevOps, and other sources, documentation can dynamically evolve with the system. This preserves knowledge, simplifies collaboration, and ensures the ongoing development of legacy applications.

The Assignment

Design and build a tool that automatically generates and updates documentation for legacy .NET applications. The tool should be capable of:

• Describing the purpose and functioning of an application.
• Mapping service interactions (such as API calls and messaging).
• Linking relevant context from work items and wiki articles to the code.
• Answering developers' questions about the system's operation.

Additionally, research:

• How to automatically process source code and DevOps information into documentation.
• What features make documentation effective and usable for developers.
• How to keep the documentation current during maintenance or changes.
• How to ensure the quality of the documentation.

Develop a Proof of Concept (PoC) that can generate documentation for several legacy .NET applications to demonstrate the tool's practical functionality.
