The Role

The Role

This fully remote position requires you to work in CET hours or be based in Barcelona. We are looking for a passionate and experienced Principal Game Designer focused on hands-on gameplay design rather than team management. You will be instrumental in delivering engaging experiences to millions of players, ensuring the highest standards of quality and innovation for Hole.io, one of our top games.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the quality standards for core mechanics, interactions, and overall game experience.
  • Design, prototype, and enhance new gameplay features and mechanics to enrich the core Hole.io loop.
  • Iterate on features and parameters to achieve optimal game feel, including aspects like friction, bounce, suction force, and camera movement.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers to implement Unity-based gameplay systems optimized for mobile.
  • Work with level designers to ensure seamless integration of gameplay mechanics in open 3D environments.
  • Identify ways to enhance player engagement, retention, and satisfaction through gameplay adjustments.
  • Lead rapid prototyping and iteration cycles, validating concepts through playtesting, A/B tests, and data analysis.
  • Establish best practices and design guidelines for gameplay systems and interaction design.
  • Collaborate with product and analytics teams to translate player data into gameplay enhancements.
  • Advocate for simplicity, clarity, and enjoyment in every player interaction.

Requirements

  • 7 years of experience in gameplay design with a proven track record in F2P mobile games.
  • Experience managing core gameplay systems from concept through launch and live operations.
  • Strong understanding of game feel, player control responsiveness, and interaction design.
  • Ability to create simple yet satisfying mechanics for players.
  • Experience designing systems based on physics interactions, player movement, and environmental gameplay.
  • Proficient in Unity with a solid grasp of its physics systems and collision mechanics.
  • Familiarity with A/B testing and data-driven decision-making.
  • Strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
  • Collaborative mindset with excellent interpersonal skills, and a positive attitude towards feedback.
  • Demonstrated accountability and independence in managing your work.
  • Willingness to improve efficiency and personal skills continuously.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in enhancing core loop retention through gameplay iterations.
  • Comfort in prototyping gameplay directly within the engine while working closely with engineers.
