But where does that take you?

To one of our 30 hybrid workspaces – designed for exchanging ideas, learning from others, and shaping the way we work. An international community of over 4,000 people, representing almost 80 nationalities across 11 countries. United by one mission: Combining empathy, advanced technology and data-driven insights to keep people and businesses in flow. With payments made for them. So that they don’t have to worry about it.

And there’s more. We are part of the family-owned Bertelsmann group. Established. Corporate. In a fast-paced industry. Job Description

We are looking for an Engineering Lead (Checkout, Consumer & Merchant) (m/f/d) (unlimited, full-time) to join our team at our Berlin, Amsterdam and Tallinn locations to build the next generation of fintech solutions.

In this role, you lead a team of Engineering Leads and take responsibility for technical excellence and delivery of performance across multiple engineering teams. Your domain spans our checkout proposition, experiences for consumers, merchants and partners as well as our consumer finance offerings.

You combine engineering leadership with architectural and organisational thinking, creating the direction and environment that enable Engineering Leads and their teams to perform at their best. You build alignment across teams, strengthen engineering leadership capabilities, and ensure local decisions contribute to a coherent and sustainable technical direction.

Working closely with Tech and Product Leadership and other senior stakeholders, you balance delivery priorities with long-term technical health, ensuring that engineering decisions and investments contribute to product and business goals.

Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Shape and own the technical direction across multiple teams, translating our architectural vision and business strategy into clear priority guidelines
  • Lead, develop and grow a team of Engineering Leads, strengthening their leadership capabilities and enabling them to build high-performing teams
  • Drive engineering and delivery excellence at scale, establishing consistent standards for quality, security, maintainability and modern engineering practices while ensuring regulatory compliance
  • Balance delivery with long-term technical sustainability, partnering with Product and Tech Leadership to prioritise technical debt and structural improvements alongside business priorities and customer needs
  • Drive alignment and continuous improvement across teams, resolving dependencies and systemic challenges, improving engineering effectiveness and enabling teams to operate with appropriate autonomy
  • Accelerate AI-enabled engineering and lead the related change, identifying high-value use cases, fostering adoption and scaling successful practices across teams

Qualifications

What will help to succeed in the role:

  • Proven experience leading engineering teams and developing engineering leaders, with the ability to create impact through others and operate effectively across multiple teams
  • Broad software engineering and architectural expertise, with the ability to reason about complex systems, technical trade-offs and architecture across frontend, backend, data and cloud technologies
  • A product and business mindset, with the ability to translate business priorities into technical direction and drive execution across teams
  • Effective communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels
  • Demonstrated AI fluency, with the ability to translate AI opportunities into engineering practice and lead the organisational change required for effective adoption
  • Ability to create alignment in a complex, international environment, navigating different perspectives and enabling effective decision-making across organisational boundaries
