Electrician for Antarctic Support at Amentum

The Role

This seasonal contract position supports the National Science Foundation-managed United States Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). Electricians will perform electrical maintenance or construction work, or any combination thereof, under the supervision of the Electrician Foreman, PM Coordinator, or Facilities Maintenance Supervisor. Tasking is based on employee’s prior work experience and ASC schedule requirements.

Responsibilities

Install, maintain, adjust, operate, test, and repair branch circuits, power distribution wiring, electrical equipment, fixtures, lighting systems, and conduit in compliance with the National Electric Code (NEC).
Diagnose, repair, and perform scheduled Preventative Maintenance on existing electrical systems, equipment, fixtures, and infrastructure.
Install fixtures, wiring conduits, motors, and other electrical equipment.
Inspect transformers, circuit breakers, and other electrical components.
Accomplish tasking working from verbal information, schematics, blueprints, wiring diagrams, documents, vendor/manufacturer manuals, and applicable electrical specifications and codes.
Work standard computations relating to load requirements of wiring or electrical equipment.
Use a variety of electrician’s hand tools and measuring and testing instruments.
Analyze situations and make technical decisions based on specifications, safety, and electrical codes.
Perform ongoing risk and hazard assessments while executing tasking.
Appropriately use personal protective equipment, including Arc Flash gear, electrical-rated boots, gloves, and non-conductive equipment.
Respond timely to emergency service calls during and outside of normal working hours.
Collaborate with other departments to plan and complete tasking.
Utilize assistance from other station personnel to complete tasking or assist other trades or departments as appropriate.
Advise immediate Supervisor of job progress and material/labor requirements.
Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of hours worked, tasking performed, materials used, and processes involved.
Prepare and document work plans, job hazard analysis, job safety analysis, code-required forms, checklists, and internal procedural documents as required.
Follow established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), suggest revisions as needed, and create SOPs as directed.
Perform tasking outdoors in environmentally challenging conditions, including wind and extreme cold weather.
Proactively identify any unsafe conditions, hazards, or Code violations and communicate them effectively.
Comply with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management, and Quality Assurance requirements.
Participate in Work Center Safety Program and ASC safety objectives.
Be a responsible, clean, and safe custodian of work areas, tools, equipment, and spare parts.
Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

High School diploma or equivalent.
A current Journeyman Electrician license, a current Master Electrician license, or equivalent Union membership in good standing. A Journeyman license requiring less than 8,000 hours or of the Residential type shall not be considered.
Minimum four years (8,000 hours) documented experience in all phases of electrical work, including rough-in, trim-out, wiring of electrical equipment and fixtures, conduit installation, and power distribution wiring including voltages up to 480.

Preferred Skills

Thorough knowledge of the current National Electrical Code and the principles of electricity.
Experience in construction and/or maintenance of commercial and/or industrial facilities.
Competent in reading and interpreting design drawings, specifications, diagrams, maintenance manuals, and manufacturer’s troubleshooting guides.
Experienced in developing written work plans, job hazard analysis, and job safety analysis related to work activities under a permit to work system.
Proficient in the use of electrical/electronic and mechanical test equipment, instruments, measuring devices, and shop tools.
Highly skilled at troubleshooting using appropriate testing devices.
Knowledgeable regarding occupational hazards of the electrical trade and related safety precautions.
Expert in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment.
Familiar with heating and air conditioning systems.
Prior computer experience and ability to learn and utilize computer-based labor, inventory, and maintenance tracking applications.
Proficient in LOTO procedures and electrical safety procedures (NFPA 70E and OSHA).

Physical and Other Requirements

Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods.
Successful completion of medical and dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica.
Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by the employer.
Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position.
Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position.
Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning up around the station), recycling efforts, and safety objectives.
Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States.
No clearance requirement, but the contract and/or the site requires US Citizenship for access.
