Laravel is the leading PHP framework with over 500 million downloads and a vibrant developer community. However, as enterprise customers transition to our managed PaaS, Laravel Cloud, they often encounter challenges with database migration. We are seeking a Database Migration Engineer to tackle this issue head-on.

The Role

In this position, you will directly engage with enterprise customers, executing database migrations alongside them rather than merely advising from a distance. You will take ownership of existing database migration tasks, including managing our relationship with PlanetScale and addressing ad-hoc requests.

Responsibilities

• Execute database migrations for enterprise and Private Cloud customers, primarily with MySQL and Postgres.
• Assume ownership of the PlanetScale relationship and manage migration tasks autonomously.
• Identify and productize repeatable migration patterns, creating documentation and decision logic.
• Automate recurring migration requests to reduce manual effort.
• Act as a generalist migration resource for broader application and service migrations.
• Create clear documentation and runbooks to empower Sales, Customer Success, and engineering teams.
• Monitor market offerings from competitors like PlanetScale and Aurora, ensuring our database offerings remain competitive.

Requirements

• Strong expertise in both MySQL and Postgres, aiming for balanced capabilities in each.
• Direct experience with database migrations in a customer-facing role.
• An instinct for productization, recognizing repeatable patterns in bespoke tasks.
• Excellent written and asynchronous communication skills for our fully remote environment.
• Ability to define part of your role and shape the function moving forward.

Nice to Have

• Experience at a database tooling or infrastructure company such as PlanetScale or Percona.
• Background in building tools or automation for migration workflows.
• Familiarity with AWS-based infrastructure or PaaS environments.
• Experience with AWS DMS or similar migration tools.
• A history of writing or speaking publicly about database topics.
• Some knowledge of PHP applications.
