We are seeking a Chief Engineer (STCW A-III/2, unlimited) to join our team, starting in the shipyard where our new vessel is being constructed. The expected start date is October 2026 in the shipyard in Vigo, Spain. Our new vessel is a 75m Sailing (DynaRig system) special-purpose, Ice class PC7 vessel powered by two E-Motors, dual-prop (CPP), and equipped with 4 dual-fuel engines (MeOH and MGO), 4 fuel cells running on compressed H2, a battery pack with regenerative capabilities, and solar panels, all connected to a DC bus and water-cooled. The vessel is Dutch flagged and maintained in DNV class, subject to regular surveys and inspections, with delivery planned for October 2027.

The Role

During your time in the shipyard, you will:

• Monitor the construction of the new vessel in collaboration with the GP hired supervision team from OSM Thome.
• Attend meetings with shipyard, site, and remote teams regarding the new build progress.
• Familiarize yourself with the new ship systems and assist in the planned maintenance system for the new build.

Onboard our vessels, you will be responsible to the Master for:

• The safe operation and maintenance of engine plant and equipment.
• Following the Safety Management System of Greenpeace.
• Safe watchkeeping of engine plant and equipment at sea and in port in accordance with STCW Chapter VIII.
• The safe operation and maintenance of all mechanical and electrical equipment outside the engine room.
• Supervising the maintenance of rigid hull inflatable boats (RHIBs) and ensuring their technical readiness for campaigns.
• Overseeing the work of all engine staff, including outboard mechanics and fitters/welders.
• Setting up engine room watches at sea and in port.
• Issuing clear Standing Instructions to engine staff for watchkeeping, bunkering, and emergency engine procedures.
• Implementing the Master’s instructions on safe working practices and shipboard environmental policy in the engine room.
• Ensuring compliance with MARPOL regulations regarding discharges from the engine room.
• Maintaining the Oil Record Book and ensuring the Oily Water Separator (OWS) and Oil Detection Monitor (ODM) are regularly tested.
• Regularly updating fleet management software for planned maintenance and inventory control.
• Ensuring timely requisition of required spares and maintaining engine logbooks.
• Providing monthly reports to the Technical Manager on engine room performance and equipment condition.
• Conferring with the Technical Manager regarding engine room procedures and policies.
• Advising the Master on equipment conditions upon arrival and discussing work priorities in port.
• Maintaining accountability for mechanical and electrical spares, fuel/water levels, and spares used.
• Participating in campaigns and training.

Requirements

What we’re looking for:

• Valid STCW certificates for a Chief Engineer (STCW A-III/2, unlimited).
• Experience with methanol/LFL fuel and IGF Code certification is desirable.
• Previous experience in a shipyard for vessel takeovers is preferred.
• A long-term team player with good interpersonal skills, able to work with a diverse crew.
• Support for and belief in Greenpeace's core aims and values.
