About the Company

Fairphone is built on strong social and environmental values, striving for a fairer electronics industry. We welcome individuals from all backgrounds to join us in our mission.

The Role

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer specializing in embedded and Android systems to enhance device longevity. In this role, you will not only maintain devices but also architect sustainable mobile technology solutions that extend hardware lifecycles up to 8 years. You will serve as the technical anchor for our Android HAL layer and vendor stack, connecting Fairphone’s hardware with the Android OS. Your expertise will be crucial in navigating the complexities of AOSP and Qualcomm's open-source and proprietary stacks, ensuring security and performance beyond traditional vendor support. You will collaborate closely with senior engineers focusing on the Android system and Linux kernel.

Responsibilities

  • Integrate and maintain the Android operating system on Fairphone devices.
  • Ensure maintainability, stability, and performance of the Android and Qualcomm HAL and vendor stack.
  • Analyze the impact of Android upgrades and drive strategies for maintaining and upgrading the vendor stack.
  • Provide technical guidance to other engineers and implement software fixes for specific challenges.
  • Collaborate with quality teams to validate fixes and maintain OS integrity.
  • Drive continuous improvement in software quality.

Requirements

  • Degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in the Android ecosystem, focusing on system maintenance and upgrades.
  • Proficient in core Android and Qualcomm stacks, including C/C++, Rust, Java, and Kotlin.
  • Experience with Android HALs such as camera, audio, WiFi, or Bluetooth is a plus.
  • Familiarity with unit and integration testing, code review tools, and continuous integration.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to document findings clearly.
  • Basic scripting knowledge (shell), process automation (Python), and version control (Git).
  • Proficient in GNU/Linux operating systems.
  • Proficient in spoken and written English.

What We Offer

  • Opportunity to impact the global electronics industry.
  • A diverse and passionate work environment.
  • 25 paid holidays per year, plus additional public holidays and a day off on your birthday.
  • Daily healthy lunch and organic FairChain coffee.
  • Collective pension scheme with employer contributions.
  • Working devices including a MacBook, Fairbuds, and a Fairphone.
  • Hybrid working model with a budget for home office setup.
  • Public transport allowance and bike purchase support.
  • Professional development budget and access to unlimited Udemy courses.
  • On-site gym and well-being services.

We encourage you to apply as soon as possible, as we review applications on a rolling basis. Join us in our mission to create a fairer, more sustainable future!
