The Role

At Optiver, we understand that exceptional trading is built on robust infrastructure. As a Data Center Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring the performance and reliability of our global systems, overseeing thousands of servers across various data centers and managing critical operations that directly influence our high-speed trading environment. This role is perfect for those who excel in dynamic, hands-on positions where their contributions yield immediate results, offering a chance to innovate, tackle complex technical challenges, and play a vital role in our pursuit of operational excellence.

The Role

In this position, you will maintain and optimize our data centers in Brazil, leveraging your IT infrastructure expertise to resolve business challenges and identify improvement opportunities. You will engage in projects of varying scales, either as a resource or as the leading engineer, guiding them from inception to completion in this impactful role. Your daily tasks will include:

  • Installing and cabling switches, servers, and appliances in our Brazil co-locations.
  • Managing power and space allocation, including capacity planning and monitoring.
  • Ensuring clean and organized cable management practices.
  • Tracking and managing spare parts and cable inventory.
  • Performing repairs and replacing components such as hard drives, memory, and transceivers.
  • Planning and executing data center build-outs, relocations, and new equipment installations.
  • Handling packing, shipping, and logistics for the Brazil co-locations.
  • Maintaining thorough data center documentation and supporting the standardization of procedures.
  • Troubleshooting and testing cabling (fiber and copper) with cable testers.
  • Assisting with system builds, configurations, and troubleshooting as necessary.

Requirements

  • Experience in modern, large-scale data centers.
  • Ability to identify basic components of network equipment (SFPs, line cards, chassis) and servers (memory, network cards, hard drives).
  • Knowledge of structured cabling systems (Cat 5, Cat 6, multi-mode, and single-mode fiber).
  • Familiarity with power and communications cabling standards.
  • Experience with cable testers for troubleshooting fiber and copper cabling issues.
  • Understanding of change control processes.
  • Basic skills in server operating system installation and configuration.
  • Strong documentation skills and attention to detail.

  • Creative problem-solving mindset with innovative ideas for enhancing data center operations.
  • Experience leading or coordinating resources in infrastructure projects from start to finish.
  • Capability to work independently and collaboratively in fast-paced settings.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs (30 kg).
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends, to implement physical infrastructure changes.
